The Team

Associate / Associate Director – Data Centre Mechanical or Electrical Engineer

Bucharest | Critical Systems | Data Centres

Build, lead and shape the future of data centre design

Cundall’s Critical Systems team is growing, and as part of our continued expansion across Europe we are establishing a dedicated data centre capability in our Bucharest office.

This is a significant opportunity for an experienced Associate or Associate Director Mechanical or Electrical Engineer to play a leading role in building and developing a high-performing local team, while delivering some of the most technically challenging and high-profile data centre projects in Europe and internationally.

You will be joining a specialist team that works solely in the data centre and mission critical sector. Our projects range from major hyperscale developments and AI-enabled campuses through to retrofit upgrades, client-led R&D studies and the evolution of global data centre template designs. We work with leading international clients on projects typically ranging from 20MW to over 1GW, giving our engineers the opportunity to influence data centre design at real scale.

This role is suited to someone who combines technical authority with strong leadership, commercial awareness and a genuine interest in helping to build something new.

The Role

The opportunity

As a senior member of our Critical Systems team in Bucharest, you will help establish and grow our local data centre engineering capability, working closely with colleagues across Europe, the Middle East and APAC.

You will take a leading role in the successful delivery of complex mechanical or electrical design solutions, supporting clients through all stages of project development — from early strategic advice and concept design through to detailed design, construction support and technical due diligence.

This is not simply a project delivery role. You will also be expected to help shape the team, mentor engineers, support recruitment, strengthen client relationships and contribute to the continued growth of our data centre business.

You will have the opportunity to influence the development and deployment of client standard designs across multiple regions, support innovation in next-generation data centre infrastructure, and help deliver facilities that are more resilient, energy efficient, sustainable and cost effective to operate.

What you’ll be doing

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and support the delivery of mechanical or electrical design packages for major data centre projects.
  • Manage project teams, technical deliverables, programmes, fees and quality standards.
  • Review designs and provide technical leadership across your discipline.
  • Work closely with clients, architects, contractors and multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Help establish, mentor and grow a dedicated data centre team in Bucharest.
  • Support recruitment, training and capability development within the local team.
  • Contribute to client relationship management and support repeat business.
  • Help develop and refine standardised data centre design approaches for global clients.
  • Participate in R&D, technical studies and innovation initiatives linked to future data centre design.
  • Support the senior leadership team in shaping the continued growth of Cundall’s Critical Systems business.

The Skills

What we’re looking for

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical or Electrical Engineer with a strong track record in the design and delivery of data centre or mission critical projects.

You will bring technical credibility, strong communication skills and the ability to lead teams in a fast-moving, client-focused environment.

You will ideally have:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status, or equivalent professional registration.
  • Significant experience in building services design within a consultancy or design environment.
  • Strong experience in the data centre sector, ideally including hyperscale or large-scale mission critical projects.
  • A good understanding of data centre design principles, resilience, redundancy, energy efficiency and operational performance.
  • Experience managing engineers and coordinating multidisciplinary design teams.
  • A proven ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines and client expectations.
  • Strong commercial awareness, including fee management, programme control and scope management.
  • Excellent client-facing communication skills.
  • A quality-focused approach and the confidence to challenge, review and improve design outputs.
  • A collaborative leadership style, with the ability to motivate and develop less experienced engineers.

Experience with retrofit projects, liquid cooling, high-density compute environments, AI-enabled data centres, technical due diligence or global template design would be particularly valuable.

Why join us?

This is a rare opportunity to join a specialist, established data centre team while also helping to build a new regional capability from the ground up.

At Cundall, our Critical Systems team is recognised for deep technical expertise, practical design thinking and long-term client relationships. We work on projects that influence the future direction of data centre infrastructure — including high-density compute, low-carbon design strategies, resilient systems and scalable template solutions.

You will be supported by experienced senior leaders across our international Critical Systems business to shape the growth, culture and technical capability of the Bucharest team.

For the right person, this role offers genuine scope to progress into a broader leadership position as the team and market presence develop.
